The Cambridge Half Marathon has become a regular fixture in the calendar for a number of Worlingham RoadRunnerz, and 2025 was no different with a bumper group of 16 of our runners taking on the course. Being held in early March, it fits well with training programmes for the Spring marathons that a number of our runners are taking on.
It is usually freezing cold. And often wet. This year however, was very different! Clear sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures added an alternative dimension. It did make the waiting around at the start more pleasant, but in terms of the running it was perhaps less helpful, particularly as it edged closer to midday. While the start was at 9:30am, runners in later waves didn't get going until as much as 45 minutes later, and there was a noticeable number of runners struggling as the race wore on.
However, what a beautiful day for a tour of the fine city of Cambridge! And if you're running a marathon in the coming weeks, then best to be prepared for all weathers!
After a toilet stop, bag drop, toilet stop, warm up, and one final toilet stop at race HQ at Midsummer Common, runners lined up and set off on a winding course around the city, including through college grounds that aren't normally open to the public. The route heads out of the city, passing the delightful villages of Grantchester and Trumpington, before heading back into Cambridge.
Our runners really appreciated the support of the crowds, with large numbers lining the route back into the city and down the final straight to the finish line.
One final chance to smile, jump, or give a miserable expression (you know who you are!) for the camera - did I mention the free photos?! - before picking up a nice chunky metal medal, Cambridge tote bag, alcohol-free beer and other goodies, and the kudos of completing a half marathon race!
Cambridge. Done. Well done to all of our runners, some of whom completed the half marathon distance for the first time, some of whom set new PBs, and some of whom know that in just a few weeks they need to run double that f
ar for the next challenge...
Plenty of us will definitely be back next year. But if I'm allowed one prediction - it'll be back to being bloomin' cold again! Will we see you there?
